What is a Web Application?

A web application is computer software that is accessed over the Internet or an Intranet (network closed off to the public).  Users access web applications using a  browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc.  If you use Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, Salesforce, or any other software in a web browser, it’s likely a web application.

GoRoller HomeMore and more companies are building web applications instead of the more traditional stand-alone apps you install on your PC.  Some of the main reasons software apps are going in this direction are:

  • Web Applications are very easy to adopt and to use.  Web browsers are ubiquitous so using a new web app is as easy as pointing to it with your browser.
  • Web Apps are easy to upgrade – there’s nothing to install on your computer.  All the upgrades to a web app happen on the web server.
  • Web Apps can be used on Windows PCs, Macs, Linux, iPads, Android Tablets, etc.  As long as you can access it with a web browser, you can likely use the web app from any device.
