Data Fusion Systems
Data fusion systems are built to combine multiple data sources to achieve a more accurate evidence based conclusion over using just a single data source.
For example, if I want to track a cargo ship as it enters and travels in a harbor, I may be able to “see” that ship with several data sources. I could have cameras in the harbor used to receive images of the ship, I could have receivers listening to it’s AIS (Automatic Identification System) transmissions, I could also have radars and sonars feeding me contacts. We could attempt to track the ship with any one of these single sources but each one has their own shortcomings that make them imperfect on their own. If we combine all of these tracking resources together in a data fusion system, we can leverage the benefits of all of the sources for a much better result.
Data fusion systems are great for multi-sensor tracking problems but they can also be used in other problem domains where multiple data sources can be smartly combined for a better solution.
We don’t work on them every day at Fieldstone Software but when the need arises, we have the experience under our belt to properly implement and reap the benefits of data fusion systems.
